Getting links can be a challenge, because the most valuable ones are those provided by sites that you do not control. Done properly and with a little thought, a blog can be a great way of gathering inbound links, which will in turn strengthen your website, raising its profile. One of the main methods of marketing a website is to try and get as many links pointing towards it as possible.
You don’t need to write like Kurt Vonnegut or Will Self to have success with your blog, but you do need to write clearly and with as few mistakes as possible. When you think about attracting links, you must think about the kinds of things that people will want to link to. A blog can feature material that is useful, controversial and humorous and these are the kinds of things that people will link to.
A lot of people make the mistake of writing adverts for themselves on their blog, not appreciating that no-one seeks out adverts to read. Just because something is published on the web, doesn’t mean it automatically has an audience. Remember that people are free to read whatever they want on the internet, so you need to stand out from the crowd.
If your blog keeps to the topic of your website, you are more likely to find like-minded people to read it. It is a good idea to make your blog personal, but also try and keep it on-topic. When a blog darts around from topic to topic, it is hard for people to follow and you want to try and find regular readers.
Be patient with a blog, as it can take time to build up a readership – particularly in the early days. Depending on the topic of your website, you may never have a huge following. Publish regularly to keep people returning and you never know when you might pick up a link or two.
